1959 MLB All-Rookie Teams

By JT
In 1959 The Sporting News (TSN) and also Topps chose All-Rookie Teams.

Willie McCovey was on both, TSN picked George Andrews for Second base while Topps picked Pumpsie Green. Don't recognize Goerge Anderson's name? He was better known as Sparky Anderson.

Jim Baxes and Joe Koppe were on both as was John Romano as the catcher as well as pitcher Jim Perry.
TSN chose Jerry Casale as its second hurler while Topps had as the second pitcher Jim O'Toole.

In the outfield, Bob Allison made both teams while Topps had Ron Fairly and Willie Tasby and TSN had Russ Snyder and Jim McAnany in their outfield.

McCovey and Allison were the AL and NL Rookies of the year by BBWA.

1958 MLB All-Rookie Team

By JT
(l to r) Leon Wagner, Willie Kirkland, Orlando Cepeda, and Jim Davenport

Orlando Cepeda led the All-Rookie team chosen by The Sporting News and was one of the four Giants mentions in the headline below. Willie Kirkland, Leon Wagner, and Jim Davenport were the other three.
Davenport played his entire career with the Giants (an All-Star in 1962) and Kirkland and Wagner went on to solid careers outside the Bay City.

For 1957 The Sporting News (TSN)  All-Rookie Team featured Tony Kubek (the AL Rookie of the Year), Jack Sanford of the Phillis (the NL Rookie of the Year), Ed Bouchee, and Turk Farrell, also of the Phillies and a fourth Phillie—Harry Anderson. A nice haul in Philadelphia.

1956 MLB All-Rookie Team

 By JT

Aparicio (l) and Robinson (r)

Here is TSN's 1956 All-Rookie Roster—

Frank Robinson heads the list, with Bill White, Luis Aparicio, and Jackie Brandt among others. Robinson was a dominant NL Rookie of the Year choice (unanimous) and a dominant rookie. Aparicio took 22 of 24 votes in the BBWA ROY AL voting.

All-Rookie teams by TSN and later Topps are important in cases where there is a dominant rookie of rookies like Robinson and Aparicio. It allows fans to remember and learn all these years later about other good seasons, like by Bill White or Brandt.

With the new metrics we can learn that White was the top ML First baseman but that in a year without a Frank Robinson White may have been a Rookie of the Year, he hit 22 home runs and stole 15 bases and as mentioned was a whiz in the field. Brandt another Giant hit .298, Don Blasingame played excellent second base for the Cardinals.

So, to me, these are fun to know and as far as we know, published nowhere on the web but at Baseball Journal

1955 MLB All-Rookie Team

 By JT

The Sporting News (TSN) picked a rookie team again in 1955. It was full of some great names. Among them Bill Virdon of the Cardinals who was the NL Rookie of the Year, Norm Zauchin of the red Sox who blasted 27 home runs and was third in the AL Rookie of the year race. Herb Score led the pitches (the AL Rookie of the Year) among others.

In my view not as strong a rookie class as 1951 or 1954 but not bad, either.

The 1952 Sporting News All-Rookie Team

 By JT

Harry Byrd (L) and Joe Black (R)

For the third year, The Sporting News picked an All-Rookie Team, and once again it had some big-time names on it. Eddie Matthews ended up in the Hall of Fame as did Hoyt Wilhelm.

Hoyt Wilhelm

Dick Groat had a terrific career, winning two World Series rings, an MVP in 1960 and was the runner-up in another MVP poll in 1960.

Harry Byrd was the AL Rookie of the Year and Joe Black was the NL Rookie of the Year but neither had stellar baseball careers but shined in 1952.

The 1951 Sporting News All-Rookie Team

 By JT

Minnie Minoso

In 1951 The Sporting News again picked a "freshman" team and what names it had. That Willie Mays kid and that Mickey Mantle kid did alright, didn't they? So did Minnie Minoso and Gil McDougald who were second and first respectively in the AL Rookie of the Year polls and in the National League Mays took the honor.

The 1950 Sporting News All-Rookie Team

 By JT

Sam Jethroe

Since no one else has collected or posted much of the data, awards, teams and so one we've decided to do it. Here is the 1950 All-Rookie team as chosen by The Sporting News

There were some terrific players on that 1950 team. Joe Adcock, speedster Sam Jethroe who hit .273, 18 homers, and stole 35 bases to lead the NL to win the NL Rookie of the Year Award.

For some reason Wally Dropo was not on the All-Rookie Team for 1950, He hit .322 and drove in 144 runs and slammed 34 homers, and was the AL Rookie of the year.  Some mysteries will never be solved.

Nonetheless here s the full team.
