1960 AL and NL Gold Glove Winners with Second-teams

By JT

Clemente

I think it's always nice to know who the honorable mentions or "second-teams" are when honors are given out. The Sporting News gave the vote totals but they've never been published. here are the Second-teams for the Gold Glove Awards in 1960.

For the third year in a row, Roberto Clemente was a Second-teamer.

      Review
Brooks Robinson, according to modern metrics should likely have won a
Gold Glove in 1959 (bot not some of the mid-1960s seasons when he did win)

Jim Landis and Roberto Clemente also should have been First-teamers rather than second-team.

1957 De facto AL and NL Gold Gloves

      By JT

      Gil Hodges

In 1957 when The Sporting News (TSN) first awarded Gold Gloves (in cooperation with Rawlings) they did it for the Major Leagues only, not for the American and National Leagues as they have done ever since.

Nineteen writers cast votes on the awards in 1957 and the full MLB Gold Glove team is listed.

However, if one breaks down the voting by league, AL and NL, you can get a reasonable view of who might have won if it hadn't been a full MLB poll.

Mays was unanimous and there was a three-way tie for NL pitcher (all three had one vote) but other than those two exceptions you can get complete teams.

In fact, three writers picked a centerfielder (we don't know who)as a right fielder, and another picked a centerfielder as a left fielder. Who was that? Mickey Mantle? Richie Ashburn? My money is on Mantle. But there is no way to ever know.

At some point using the modern fielding metrics we will examine how the writers did versus the "metrics" but for now, it's interesting to see perhaps Aparicio earned one extra Gold Glove or that Mickey Vernon perhaps got one in spirit, if not in reality.

Now for analyzing the selections it is much harder because in some cases some players with high totals in fielding runs (regardless of source) were not regulars or maybe didn't pass the "eye test". It's hard to know what first basemen saved runs by scooping up poor throws and also the various types of pitching staffs that gave players more or fewer chances, i.e. fly ball pitchers or ground ball pitchers or strikeout pitchers who gave out less of both.

So, that said, Vic Power would likely be the best choice for the mythical American League Gold Glove at first.

Don Blasingame likely has the best statistical season with the metrics and would be our mytical NL and MLB second baseman.

Gus Triandos likely "out-metriced" Loller. Roy McMillan didn;t have his best metric year, Gil McDougald (got three votes from the panel)  and Johnny Logan did a bit better but again, how can I know what happened better than the panel if there is not a big difference in the runs save?

Without much question, Roberto Clemente should have at least the NL right field spot.
Charlie Maxwell got a couple votes from the panel and showed well in the metrics, better than Minoso, but there again, the "eye test" I am willing to bet was won by Minoso. Same with Mays over some with some better metrics in centerfield like Richie Ashburn and Bill Virdon.

So, put Power in for Mickey Vernon and Clemente in for Carl Furillo and I'd be good with the rest of the choices by the panel.

You may disagree. Let me know what you think.

      1956 Virtual Gold Gloves

       By JT

Using Sean Smith's Defensive WAR and Rtot, Michael Humphrey's DRA, Bill James's FiWS, Pete Palmer's FR, Clay Davenport's FRAA, Tom Thress' net fielding wins and other indicators, I've awarded "Virtual" Gold Gloves to the most deserving players.

      1956 Virtual Gold Gloves

       NL
C- Roy Campenella; Crandall a close second Bailey was third
1B- Bill White; Gil Hodges, Stan Musial
      2B-Junior Gilliam; #2 Blasingame
SS- Roy McMillan, no one really close, maybe Logan #2
3B-Ken Boyer; followed by Jackie Robinson
OF--Richie Ashburn; Willie Mays; Bill Burton (Hank Aaron, Monte Irvin, Frank Robinson, and Duke Snider all showed well)

      AL
C -Yogi Berra a clear winner this season; #2 Loller; #3 Hegan
1B- Vic Power, Vic Wertz, Runnells
2B- Bobby Avila; #2 Nelli Fox; #3 Goodman
SS - Luis Aparicio  #2 Chico Carrasquel; Joe DeMaestri
3B- Al Rosen;  Bill Klaus is #2
OF- Jimmy Piersall; Al Kaline; Charlie Maxwell;  (Jim Busby; #4a, 4b Larry Doby; 4c Mickey Mantle) but Piersall was way ahead.

Bill White has an excellent year, a clear winner which would add to his actual Gold glove total.

In the NL outfield, the dWar ranks were 1. Ashburn 2. Aaron 3. Bruton 4. Mays-Bobby Thomson

In  DRA the ranks were 1.Richie Ashburn, 2. Monte Irvin, 3.Roberto Clemente, 4.Frank Robinson, 5.Willie Mays, 6.Hank Aaron, 7.Bill Bruton,  8.Jim King.

In multi-year DRA the top for were:  Roberto Clemente, Richie Ashburn, Frank Robinson, Willie Mays

This is the leader board for Total Run Zones
      1. Ashburn, PHI-16.0
      2. Aaron, MIL-15.0
      3t. Thomson, MIL-13.0
      3t. Mays, NYG-13.0
      3t. Bruton, MIL-13.0
      6. Snider, BRO-12.0
      7. Irvin, CHC-10.0
      8t King, CHC-9.0
      8t. Robinson, CIN-9.0

In Fielding Runs (Palmer) it was (1) Ashburn (2) King and (3) Irvin, and in Win Shares Bruton was first then Mays and Ashburn were second and third.

In Davenport's FRAA  Ashburn was first, Aaron was second, then Wally Post third, Monte Irvin fourth, Willie Mays fifth, and Frank Robinson sixth.

Agree or disagree? Let me know. In fact, I'd love someone better to do this

      1955 Virtual Gold Gloves

       By JT

      Jimmy Piersall

Using Sean Smith's Defensive WAR and Rtot, Michael Humphrey's DRA, Bill James's FiWS, Pete Palmer's FR, Clay Davenport's FRAA, Tom Thress' net fielding wins and other indicators, I've awarded "Virtual" Gold Gloves to the most deserving players.

      1955 Virtual Gold Gloves

      1955 NL
C- Del Crandall was best, Roy Campenella next
      1B- Gil Hodges; #2 Musial
      2B- O’Connell; #2 Schoendienst;  #3 Gilliam, Temple
      3B- Hoak; #2 Robinson; #3 Boyer #4 Hank Thompson
SS- Roy McMillan; #2 Banks, #3 Logan
OF- Willie Mays; Ashburn; Bruton(Snider, Furillo, Clemente, Aaron, and Mikas next)

      1955 AL
C- Loller led most and next was Hegan; #3 Berra
1B- Vic Power #2 Norm Zauchin. Close, but DRA tilts it to Power.
2B- McDougald; #2 Fox; #3 Avilla (in actual voting Fox may have gotten it, but McDougald was ahead in most metrics)
SS- George Strickland; #2 Miranda, Chico Carrasquel
3B- Andy Carey (dominated); Lopez, Rosen
OF- Jimmy Piersall; Mickey Mantle; Minnie Minoso (Al Kaline,  Hank
Bauer, Busby, Diering, Tuttle, Noren-too few innings) and Rivera-too few innings all showed nicely).

Platinum Gloves AL - Piersall     NL  Mays

The NL outfield was close. But again Mays emerged first. He was first in Palmer's Fielding Runs, first in Humphreys' multi-year DRA, second among outfielders in Clay Davenports FRAA, third in dWar, first in Total Run Zones, Second in Centerfield Range Factor, and fourth in Bill James' Fielding Win Shares.

Ashburn's rankings in all those were second and Bruton was fourth.

In the AL it was difficult. Piersall was clear #1 and Mantle and Minoso close. The rest--judgment call, likely Mantle’s best fielding season as many metrics show him as a bit below average most years, in 1955 he stands out). Mantle was 2nd in James' Defensive Win Shares and in Total Run Zones and dWar among center fielders.

Agree or disagree? Let me know. In fact, I'd love someone better to do this.
