1951 Virtual Gold Gloves

 By JT

Bobby Avila

Using Sean Smith's Defensive WAR and Rtot, Michael Humphrey's DRA, Bill James's FiWS, Pete Palmer's FR, Clay Davenport's FRAA, Tom Thress' net fielding wins and other indicators, I've awarded "Virtual" Gold Gloves to the most deserving players.

1951 Virtual Gold Gloves

AL
C- Berra; Hegan next then Loller
1B- VernonFain and then Easter
2B- Avila, then Fox
3B- Stevens, Bos
SS- Chico Carrasquel, Rizutto next
OF- Busby, Coan, Noren

NL
C- Campenella, Rice second, Westrom 3rd
1B- Hodges, Kluszewski
2B- Jackie Robinson, Stanky, and then Schoendienst
SS- Dark, followed by Pee Wee Reese
3B- Cox, Brooklyn
OF- Ashburn, Mays, Furillo. Monte Irvin the top left-fielder.

NL outfield. Merriman was the best, stat-wise but he only played a little over 600 innings. Too few, really, to qualify. Mays was actually a surprise to me, being his rookie year, but dWAR, Win Shares, and most every metric had him in the top three.

Agree or disagree? Let me know. In fact, I'd love someone better to do this.
