The 1956 All-MLB Team

 By JT

Don Newcombe

The Sporting News (TSN) and the Associated Press (AP) teams were identical except for the usual difference—TSN picked three pitchers, this year it was Don Newcombe of the Dodgers. Newcombe was 27-7 and had an era of 3.06 so he was deserving of being All-MLB.

The AP had a Second-team and it was composed of players like Stan Musial, Duke Snider, Willie Mays, rookie Frank Robinson and Whitey Ford among others listed above.

The United Press chose All-NL and All-AL teams and blessed us with the vote tallies.

So, we know that the Second-team first baseman was Joe Adcock, the backup second sacker was Jim Gilliam, and Eddie Matthews and Ernie Banks rounded out the infield and the second-team Al-NFL outfield was Willie Mays, Bill Virdon, and Wally Post. Roy Campanella was the backup catchers and Johnny Antonelli and Bob Friend were the Second-team pitchers.

The second-team All-AL outfield was Jimmy Piersall, Hank Bauer, and Minnie Minoso. Vic Power was the Second-team first baseman, Gil McDougald was at third and short, and Billy Martin was at second. Sherm Lollar got a vote at catcher and Early Wynn and herb Score backed up the starting pitchers.

We love that Baseball Journal has these teams and few (if anyone) else does. We hope you are enjoying them.

Here are the opening lineups for the MLB All-Star game—
