Dave Kingman—Another Vagabond Favorite

 By JT

I liked Dave Kingman, so sue me. I liked the early 1970s Mets and especially Tom Seaver, they pushed the 1973 Oakland As to seven games with a team with zero offense ao when they got Kong Kingman I thought it was great. And he provided power, but no glove at all.

So, he hit home runs and little else and kind of began what we saw more of in the 1980s and 1990s, guys who could hit the ball far but struck out a ton—Gorman Thomas, Pete Incaviglia, Rob Deer—like that.

Regardless, he was fun to watch bat. Per Baseball-refernce.com here are his batting stats—

Pretty consistent I'd say. Two hone run titles, four times he led in at-bars per hone run and is still 16th all-time in that category. And in 1972 he had a Power-Speed Number of 20.5, good for 5th in the National League. The big man could run when he was young.

So, yeah, he was flawed. But among the DH-type, frequent home run/big K-types he'd be high on my list. Just with the Mets had him in 1973.
